Winchelsea 1563
biography text

For the 1566 session of this Parliament one of the Winchelsea Members was replaced by Henry Brooke alias Cobham I, brother of the 10th Lord Cobham, lord warden of the Cinque Ports.1Folger V. b. 298. As the most probable cause of a vacancy would have been the death of a sitting Member, and Henry Fane I is known to have lived until 1580, it was probably Chambers who was replaced. This would exclude from consideration Richard Chambers of Chambers Court, Litlington, and Rodmell, Sussex, as he is known to have lived until considerably later than 1566. Perhaps the MP was a namesake from the same family, as they favoured the christian name Richard. Whoever he was, the fact that he was replaced by Lord Cobham’s brother points to the probability of his own return having been 2obtained by the lord warden.2J. Comber, Suss.
