DACRE, Henry (c.1577-1623), of Lanercost, Cumb.

Dacre’s father was sheriff of Cumberland in 1565 and 1581-2, a border commissioner, and one of the few border squires described as ‘well affected’ in 1583. His estate was then valued at £300. When Henry Dacre succeeded to the manor and rectory of Lanercost, together with numerous houses and extensive lands in several neighbouring parishes, he was still a minor, and his wardship was sold to Sir Edward Norris for £110. At the time, Dacre was a student of the Inner Temple; he kept commons there at least until 28 July 1601, when he was barred from commons with several others until he found a pledge for his debts. He owed his sole return to Parliament to his maternal grandfather. On 25 Sept. 1600 he signed Lord Scrope’s petition against the Carletons (see CARLETON, Thomas).
