biography text
Darte was a Barnstaple merchant who, in 1589, settled on his wife’s Cornish estates. In his Survey of Cornwall2ed. Halliday, 216. Richard Carew wrote that Pentewan
harbours Master Darte, who, as divers other gentlemen well descended and accommodated in Devon, do yet rather make choice of a pleasing and retired equality in the little Cornish angle.
Darte was twice returned to Parliament, once for his native town and a second time for a constituency in his new county, no doubt procured for him by his wife’s family, possibly through their connexion with the Trevanions.
He died in 1632, being buried at Mevagissey on 12 Apr.
