Of an old family, little has been ascertained about Dering, described by Peyton as

a man very sufficient, being a discreet gentleman of a fair living, well acquainted with the service of the place and nature of the persons under my charge, and one upon whose loyalty I dare repose my life and fortunes, of which I had good experience in the late troubles,

a reference, presumably, to the Essex rebellion. It is not known how Dering obtained his seat at Clitheroe in 1601—perhaps there was a link with Sir John Fortescue, who appears to have asked for that particular nomination, or perhaps the connexion was through the Twysdens. Dering died in 1636, being buried at Pluckley 18 Mar.1Haslewood, Dering Gen. Memoranda, 7, 12; Vis. Kent (Harl.
