ELWOOD, Thomas (d.1612), of Dover, Kent.

Elwood had evidently some standing in Dover by February 1586, when he and the mayor wrote jointly to the lord warden on various administrative matters. On 24 Jan. 1593, during his mayoralty, when Elwood was elected to Parliament by the Dover corporation and common assembly, he was promised a wage of 4s. a day. Later he complained that his wages were two years in arrears. The burgesses for Dover were appointed to a committee for the explanation of statutes on 28 Mar. 1593. He died in 1612, bequeathing an annual rent of 20s. to be distributed in bread by the overseers of St. Mary’s church.1J. B. Jones, Dover Annals, 300, 379; E. W.
