A ‘Robert Eyre esquire’ was brought into Parliament for Winchelsea in 1571 by the lord warden, the 10th Lord Cobham. Of a number of namesakes, the most likely to have been this man was one of Derbyshire who, having married a Kent heiress, and moved to her estates, probably knew Lord Cobham, and was certainly acquainted with Sir Roger and John Manwood Under pressure, as she later alleged, the lady handed over her estate to Eyre, who rebuilt the house in preparation for the reception of the Queen on her Kent progress in 1573.
