biography text

Guybon came of a family which had held land at or near Lynn since the early fourteenth century. His great-grandfather, Thomas, sat for Lynn in 1510 and members of his family held a number of county and borough offices. Guybon himself was a lawyer who lived on his inherited property in West and King’s Lynn. For his only seat in Parliament he went to the nearby borough of Castle Rising, helped perhaps by his brother-in-law, Thomas Norris, who had been one of its Members in 1586. Guybon’s father was sheriff of Norfolk when the returns for 1597 were made. He himself is not mentioned in the journals of the House, but he may have attended a committee in his capacity as Member for Castle Rising on 3 Dec. 1597, concerned with land reclamation.

Guybon obtained property at Obey through his second marriage, but he continued to reside at Lynn, and it was probably there that he died on 23 Jan. 1605, leaving a son of 15 years as heir. A part of the will he made on 20 Jan. is quoted in his inquisition post mortem, but has not been found elsewhere. He may be the Thomas Gybbons who compiled a collection of records of the Calthorpe family at the end of the sixteenth century.2Blomefield, Norf. viii. 538; xi. 175; D’Ewes, 567; C142/288/143; Cal.
