Haverfordwest | 1559 |
Mayor, Haverfordwest ?1538, 1553, j.p. 1561.
According to Dwnn (whose pedigree of the family is open to doubt), Harris’s grandfather, Sir John Harris, came from Essex. If so, his son’s marriage into an old Carmarthenshire family and his grandson’s marriage to a grand-daughter of Sir Rhys ap Thomas, the chief Welsh supporter of Henry of Richmond, gave the family an assured place in Welsh county society. His one appearance in Parliament for his local borough left no trace in the records. He died on 21 Aug. 1566. His will, which was not proved until 1571, lists a number of properties in Haverfordwest and in the neighbouring parish of Redbourne. A small sum went towards the maintenance of St. David’s cathedral, and Harris expressed a wish to be buried in St. Mary’s, Haverfordwest. His widow was executrix, and his son Thomas was principal heir.1Dwnn, Vis. Wales, i. 161; NLW, 1387, f. 42; West Wales Hist. Soc. viii. 93-112; LP Hen.
