biography text

Described as of London in 1556, by 1559 Hawtrey was living at West Turville, afterwards acquiring a 21-year lease of the rectory and advowson of Wendover, where he was living when he made his will in July 1582. The will, proved 3 Apr. 1587, mentions neither wife nor son. He asked to be buried at Ellesborough, Buckinghamshire, and left all his goods to his brother William, who was co-executor with another brother, Thomas. Hawtrey may have owed his return for Bedford to the 2nd Earl of Bedford, who mentions him in his will.1G. Lipscomb, Bucks. iii. 485; CPR, 1555-7, p. 86; 1558-60, p. 158; F. M. Hawtrey, Hist. Hawtrey Fam. i. 30; Bucks. wills no. 207; PCC 45 Windsor.
