Newport Iuxta Launceston | 1559 |
Mayor, Launceston 1575 – 76, 1581 – 82, ?1589–90.1Vivian, Vis. Cornw. 446; R. and O. B. Peter, Hist Launceston and Dunheved, 401–2.
A Thomas Hickes, tenant of the lands of Launceston priory, of which the borough of Newport formed a part, was mayor of Launceston in 1535-6 and again in 1555 when the town was granted its new charter. This man was born in 1487 and is unlikely to have entered Parliament for the first time at the age of 72. It is probable, therefore, that the 1559 MP was his son, about whom nothing has been ascertained. A Thomas Hickes, son of Digory Hickes, was buried at St. Thomas, Launceston, in February 1587, but this was probably the nephew of the 1559 Member.2CPR, 1555-7, pp. 174-8; LP Hen.
