biography text
Holt was a Lancashire lawyer about whom little is known. Expelled from Gray’s Inn for ‘an abuse in outrageous manner committed’, at two or three o’clock in the morning of 3 Feb. 1590, he was re-admitted upon payment of a fine. He contributed 10s. towards the rebuilding of Gray’s Inn gate. There is no indication that Holt played any part in local affairs, and he was presumably returned for Clitheroe through duchy of Lancaster influence. He purchased his Lancashire property late in life, presumably from his earnings as a lawyer. He died about 1620.1Pink and Beaven, Parl. Rep. Lancs. 147, 250; G.
