biography text
Hyde was returned at a by-election in 1566 when there was plague at Hereford. His colleague who went up to London was at once sent home, and the fact that Hyde is not mentioned as being with him indicates that he probably never made the journey. A Catholic sympathizer, he was classed by the bishop of Hereford among the ‘chief and principal receivers and maintainers’ of those Marian clergy who had been turned out by Elizabeth, ‘which be mortal and deadly enemies’ to the Elizabethan church.1Cam. Misc. ix(3), pp. 14-15, 19.
