biography text

The 1589 Sudbury MP whose particulars appear above was not Sir Robert Jermyn’s son and heir, who was too young, but Sir Robert’s nephew. Despite Debden’s relative proximity to Sudbury, a duchy of Lancaster borough, Jermyn probably owed his return to Sir Francis Walsingham, the chancellor. At least, he would hardly have been elected without Walsingham’s approval. Jermyn died in 1607.1Suff. Green Bks. vi. 167, 225; W. A. Copinger, Suff. Manors, v. 232; vi. 248; Vis. Suff. ed.
