MANNERS, Roger II (c.1575-1632), of Whitwell, Derbys.

When the writs for the new Parliament were issued in September 1601, Roger, 5th Earl of Rutland, and two of his brothers were still in disgrace for their part in the abortive Essex rising, so leaving the way open for junior members of the family to be returned for boroughs where Rutland normally had influence. Manners received from his great-uncle and namesake the manors of Fleet Fitzwaters and Holbeach, Lincolnshire, and, from his father the manor of Whitwell, Derbyshire. He was thus endowed with a sufficient estate to take his place as a country gentleman.
