Mildmay was returned unopposed to Parliament for Maldon through his father’s influence. The chamberlain’s accounts for 1593 show the charges ‘about the eating of the buck given to the town by the right worshipful Sir Thomas Mildmay ... in the entertaining of Mr. Thomas Mildmay’. It was apparently intended to put him up again in February 1604, but in the event he was not returned. He appears not to have enjoyed the confidence of his father, who, in his will dated 1606, adjured his second son Henry ‘not to follow or incline to his elder brother Thomas and his vain and unthrifty courses’.
