STRINGER, Robert (b.c.1532), of Derby.

Stringer, a vintner, was descended from a family of tradesmen established in Derby since at least the reign of Edward IV. He was appointed to a committee on leatherworkers, 18 Feb. 1576, and to one on maltsters, 12 Jan. 1598. As one of the Derby burgesses he may have served on the monopolies committee, 10 Nov. 1597, and a committee concerning spinners and weavers appointed the same day. He may have been the Robert Stringer who, ‘about December 1592’ was one of those employed by the 7th Earl of Shrewsbury, to go to court to complain about Sir Thomas Stanhope’s weir. In the same year he was a witness in a court of Exchequer inquiry into a local land dispute. The date of his death has not been found. If he is the man who appears on a list of Derby residents in 1611, he would have been about 80 at that date. Thomas Stringer, probably a relative, was bailiff in 1617.2J. C.
