VAUGHAN, Rowland (d.1566), of Porthaml, Talgarth, Brec.

Vaughan’s family had dominated Breconshire since the Act of Union. He had his first parliamentary experience, as Member for the Boroughs, soon after he had finished his education at an inn of court. He soon afterwards joined his father on the county bench, and in the next Parliament Sir Roger surrendered to his son the county seat, taking over from him the representation of the Boroughs. It is interesting to see that the 1563 election return styles him Sir Rowland Vaughan. A Rowland Vaughan was buried at St. Margaret’s, Westminster, on 19 Jan. 1566. Whether or not this was the MP, Rowland Vaughan of Porthaml was certainly dead (during the life of his father) by 25 June that year, when administration of his estate was granted to the widow.1T.
