biography text

Described as ‘gent, stranger’on being made freeman, Watkin apparently settled in Wells. On 30 Nov. 1591 he was appointed a special commissioner to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disposal of Bishop Godwyn’s goods, carried off by his relations on his death in 1590. As one of the Wells burgesses in 1597 Watkin was appointed to the committee considering the bill for Bristol (28 Nov.), and, as burgess for a Somerset borough, he could have attended the committee considering rebuilding Langport Eastover (10 Nov.).

Nothing further has been ascertained about him.1Wells Charters (Som. Rec. Soc. xlvi), 115, 116, 190; D’Ewes, 564; Townshend, Hist. Colls. 103; E178/1966, see also GODWYN, Thomas.
