WEBBE, Anthony (d.?1578), of St. Andrew’s, Canterbury and Fordwich, Kent.

Webbe was a mercer like his father, his brother, and probably his eldest son John. Between 1562 and 1574 his name appears frequently among those who read and signed the churchwardens’ accounts of St. Andrew’s parish. One entry records that he paid 2s. for ‘the old communion book’. After being active in civic affairs for a number of years he became mayor, and, while still in office, he was returned to Parliament, being appointed to a committee on alehouses 17 Feb. 1576. He died during the course of the Parliament, having made his will ‘much pained in my body’ 1 Oct. 1577. His son John, who proved the will on 10 Apr. 1578, later moved to London, though he retained Fordwich as his country estate.1J. M.
