WHARTON, Michael (d.1590), of Beverley Park, Yorks.

Wharton was of sufficient standing to secure his own return at Beverley. He was presumably related to the 2nd Lord Wharton, who was high steward of the manor of Beverley from October 1553 to his death in 1572, but nothing further has been ascertained about him beyond the will he made on 21 Apr. (proved 28 Sept.) 1590. His considerable lands in and around Beverley went to the heir Michael, the widow received a life annuity of £100, the younger sons maintenance while they were at university and the three daughters marriage portions of 500 marks each. He left his best horse to (Sir) Christopher Hilliard I, and horses to two other Yorkshire gentlemen, Philip Constable and Ralph Hansby, who was to become the father-in-law of Wharton’s eldest son.
