The fact that the 1584 Orford MP is styled ‘esquire’ in the election return makes it marginally more likely that he was the first of the above gentlemen. This branch of the Wingfields was connected with the Sones, several of whom sat for Orford in this period, and Richard Wingfield (brother of the first above-mentioned and father of the second) had sat for Orford, so there would have been no difficulty about securing the return of either. The MP was made a freeman of Orford at his election to Parliament, and gave a signed undertaking not to ask for parliamentary wages. On 12 Mar. 1583 ‘Mr. Cavendish, Mr. Henry Wingfield and Mr. Sone’ figure in the Ipswich assembly book, asking that one Gabriel Dole, tailor, should be made a freeman. Nothing further of interest has been ascertained about either Henry Wingfield, and no will or inquisition post mortem has been found.1Visct.
