On the death of his father, Hyde inherited estates in Somerset, Dorset and Shropshire. He was twice returned for Chippenham in the Elizabethan period, probably owing to the intervention of the 2nd Earl of Pembroke. On the second occasion he had as colleague his father (or younger brother).

A country gentleman, Hyde’s life was summarised by his nephew, Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon. He ‘had many children, lived to the age of eighty, and left his estate a little impaired by the marriage of many daughters of his son’. He died intestate in 1642.1Wilts. Vis. Peds. (Harl.
