MARSHALL, Thomas (1574-1616), of Abbotts Ann, Hants; later of Downton, Wilts.

Marshall’s grandfather, of Lincolnshire origin, settled in Salisbury. His father’s marriage brought him a house in Abbotts Ann, near Andover, some 25 miles north of Lymington.6 HMC Var. iv. 226. Marshall may have been nominated for the freedom of the borough by his mother’s relations, the Cottons, who held property nearby, and doubtless also with the approval of the high steward, (Sir) Henry Wallop*. Elected in 1604 for Lymington, together with a local lawyer, Thomas South, Marshall was named to only two committees during the course of the entire Parliament. Both appointments occurred on 21 Apr. 1604, and were to consider a private bill promoted by the dean and chapter of Windsor and a bill to abolish benefit of clergy for stabbing.7 CJ, i. 181b, 182b.

On 19 June 1605 Bishop Cotton of Salisbury, who was striving to recover property alienated from the see by his predecessors, entrusted his nephew Marshall with a letter to the earl of Salisbury (Robert Cecil†) concerning a dispute with (Sir) Thomas Gorges†.8 HMC Hatfield, xvii. 265. In 1607 Marshall moved to Downton, taking over his cousin Thomas Stockman’s* lease from Winchester College of a house with 35 acres of land.9 Winchester Coll. ms 5097. He does not seem to have stood for election to the Addled Parliament. He drew up his will on 19 Mar. 1614, leaving his widow to inherit his house in Abbotts Ann, which had been let, and his lease at Downton; however, she died before the will was proved, and the property passed to his son, Thomas.10 PROB 11/132, f. 304. Marshall was buried at Downton on 28 Aug. 1616. Nothing is known of his descendants.
