Tomkins’ ancestors were holding Garnstone by 1553, and when Weobley was enfranchised in 1628, he joined his father in the third Caroline Parliament, but left no trace on its records. When he drew up his will on 10 Oct. 1639 he declared himself ‘at present well in body’, but he had given up any hope of children. He was re-elected to the Short and Long parliaments thereafter, but a new writ was ordered on 2 Jan. 1641. His brother Thomas, who inherited his estate of over £1,000 p.a., replaced him at a by-election and sat again for the borough after the Restoration as a country Cavalier.3 C.J.
