Arthington was initially invited to contest Aldborough at the first general election of 1679 by Sir John Reresby, although subsequently he agreed to stand jointly with Reresby’s opponent, Sir Godfrey Copley, on the interest of the lord of the manor, John Wentworth. Classed as ‘worthy’ by Shaftesbury, he proved totally inactive in the first Exclusion Parliament. He was given leave on 14 May, and was still absent for the division on the bill. He nevertheless considered standing for re-election in August but did not go to the poll. He died on 21 Feb. 1682 and was buried at Adel. His cousin, Cyril Arthington, inherited the property, and was returned for Aldborough in 1701.2R. V. Taylor, Leeds Worthies, 163; Reresby Mems. 169-70; C10/510/4.
