biography text

Browne was returned for Bletchingley as a Tory at a contested election in 1685, and included in the Opposition on Danby’s list. A moderately active Member of James II’s Parliament, he was appointed to five committees, including that to recommend expunctions from the Journals. He was given a commission in a cavalry regiment on Monmouth’s invasion, but he opposed the King’s religious policy, and after closeting he was cashiered in March 1687. He died before his father and was buried at Dorking on 24 July 1688.2Luttrell, i. 398; Hatton Corresp. (Cam. Soc. n.s. xxiii), 66; Surr. RO, Clayton mss 60/9/6.
