Brownlow had been well provided for at an early age by his great-uncle, who left him an estate worth £2,000 p.a. and personal property valued at £10,000, and his first marriage was particularly fortunate. Elected for Peterborough at a by-election at the end of the Convention Parliament he became an active Member, being appointed to five committees, including those to consider the petition of the Royal Africa Company and the bill for the sale of the estates of Judge Jeffreys. It was probably he rather than his brother who supported the disabling clause in the bill to restore corporations, as he remained a court Whig in the succeeding Parliament. He died intestate and much in debt at his London home on 6 Mar. 1701, and was buried at Sutton. His son sat for Grantham and Lincolnshire as a Whig from 1713 to 1741, receiving an Irish peerage in 1718.2Cust, ii. 171, 185; Ellis Corresp. ii. 99.
