Freeman, Ludlow 1676, common councilman 1676 – d., town clerk 1679 – 80, 1681 – d.; commr. for assessment, Salop 1679–80.2Ludlow corp. ledger bk.; CSP Dom. 1679–80, p. 123; 1680–1, p. 158.
Charlton became a lawyer like his father. His appointment by the Ludlow corporation as town clerk in April 1679 was initially approved by the crown, but quashed on a technicality at the instance of Lord Newport. However, Charlton’s father used his extensive interest at Court to procure a royal veto on the rival candidate, and he regained the post in February 1681. A Tory, he was reappointed under the 1685 charter and elected to James II’s Parliament. But he died three days later on 18 Apr. before it met, and was buried at Ludford.3CSP Dom. 1679-80, pp. 514, 602-3; 1680-1, p. 23; 1685, pp. 50-51; Trans. Salop Arch. Soc. (ser. 2), vii. 34.
