Hotham’s marriage alienated him from his parents, although the bride brought him property worth £300 p.a. and £2,000 in cash. Presumably a Whig collaborator, he was recommended to the King for the East Riding bench in 1688. In May 1689 he was returned for Beverley at the by-election caused by his father’s death, but the House allowed him leave of absence on 23 July and he proved to be a totally inactive Member of the Convention. He did not stand again, and died suddenly in Amsterdam on 25 Aug. 1691. His cousin and heir, Sir Charles Hotham, sat for Scarborough and Beverley as a Whig from 1695 till his death in 1723.2Saltmarshe, 186, 188-90; A.M.W. Stirling, The Hothams, 111-13.
