Howard’s ancestors acquired Great Rudbaxton, some three miles from Haverfordwest, by 1580. His grandfather was appointed to the county committee in 1644, but they did not belong to the major gentry. Howard presumably opposed exclusion, for he remained on the commission of the peace from 1677 until his death. His marriage into the Philipps family in 1678 undoubtedly enhanced his status. He defeated Thomas Owen in 1681, but left no trace on the records of the short Oxford Parliament. He was killed in a duel on 7 July 1682 and buried at Rudbaxton, the only member of his family to sit in Parliament. The estate passed to his sister, Mary Tasker.2S. R. Meyricke, Vis.
