Vaughan was nominated for the proposed order of the Royal Oak with an estate of £1,000 p.a., presumably settled on him by his father out of the Golden Grove property. On the death of the 5th Viscount Hereford, he was granted the stewardship of numerous crown manors in Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire. Returned for the latter county at a by-election in the same year, he was inactive, though ‘Col. Altham Vaughan’ was classed by Shaftesbury as ‘thrice worthy’. He made no speeches and no committee work can be ascribed to him with certainty. As a member of the corporation, he transferred to the borough for the three Exclusion Parliaments. In 1679 he was again marked ‘worthy’, but voted against the first exclusion bill. He was buried on 16 Feb. 1682 at Llanfihangel Aberbythych.
