| Helston | [1689], [1690] |
Sheriff, Cornw. 1704–5.
A Tory, who during the Convention had voted against declaring the throne vacant, St. Aubyn was again returned for Helston in 1690. In March 1690 Lord Carmarthen (Sir Thomas Osborne†) classed him as a Tory and a Court supporter, and in December he was listed among those thought likely to defend Carmarthen from parliamentary attack. In April 1691 Robert Harley* classed him as a Country supporter. Little can be said of St. Aubyn’s contribution to the Commons as he appears to have been a frequent absentee; he was granted leave of absence on 22 Jan. 1692, 28 Jan. 1693 and 10 Feb. 1694. He did not stand at the 1695 or in any subsequent election, though he did serve as Cornwall’s sheriff in the election year of 1705. St. Aubyn died on 20 June 1714 and was succeeded by his eldest son and namesake, who sat for Cornwall between 1722 and 1744.2 Polsue, Complete Paroch. Hist. Cornw. i. 263.
