The Herles had settled at Prideaux in the 14th century and gained Landue by marriage in the 1600s. Landue and other estates were settled upon Herle’s father in 1672, and Herle succeeded to these estates before his first birthday. He gained the remainder of the family estates upon the death of his uncle in 1697. He probably owed his return for Launceston to the recommendation of the borough’s recorder Lord Lansdown (George Granville*). Herle was classed as a Tory in the Worsley list and in two further comparisons of the 1713 and 1715 Parliaments, and sat as such in the 1715 Parliament. He died on 14 Apr. 1721 and was succeeded in his estates by his only son, Northmore.3 Polsue, Complete Paroch. Hist. Cornw. iii. 122–3; N. and Q. ser. 8, xii. 442–4.
