Calthorpe took over his father’s seat in the 1713 Parliament, surviving a contest and a petition. Welcomed by the Flying Post as a ‘good patriot’, he voted on 18 Mar. 1714 against the expulsion of Richard Steele and was classed as a Whig in the Worsley list and two other lists of the 1713 and 1715 Parliaments, but his parliamentary career was tragically brief. He died, v.p., of smallpox on 10 Apr. 1714, and was buried at Elvetham.2 Flying Post, 10–13 Sept. 1713; Boyer, Pol. State, vii. 411; Le Neve, Mon. Angl. 1700–15, pp. 282–3.
