biography text

Harris’ grandfather, John Harris, had been regius professor of Greek at Oxford, 1619–22, and warden of Winchester College from 1630 till his death in 1658. His father, Sir Richard, was chosen recorder of Winchester by 1682 but was subsequently displaced by the surrender of the charter to James II. Harris himself, after reading law at the Inner Temple, settled in Winchester. Returned for Southampton at a by-election in 1712, he was not an active Member. He retained his seat at Southampton in 1713 and was classed as a Tory on the Worsley list. He died in 1717, his will being proved on 15 Nov.3 Wood, Ath. Ox. iii. 455; PCC 209 Winch.
