biography text

Martin inherited from his elder brother the Hampshire and Sussex estates of his father’s cousin, Sir Richard Knight†, and consequently assumed the name Knight. In 1698 he was returned for Arundel, which was less than two miles from Lyminster. An analysis of the House about September 1698 was unsure of his political inclinations and erroneously listed him among the Members who had sat in the previous Parliament. He voted against the disbanding bill on 18 Jan. 1699, and was given leave for 21 days on 20 Dec. He was classed as ‘doubtful’ in an analysis of the House in January–May 1700. Defeated in the first 1701 election, he did not stand again and died unmarried in 1702, leaving his estates to his sister Elizabeth and her husband William Woodward Knight*.2 Berry, 46; Horsfield, Suss. 144; VCH Hants, ii. 497.
