Pleydell, who like his brothers was obliged to take the name Morton by the provisions of his maternal grandfather’s will, probably owed his return at Wootton Bassett chiefly to the St. John interest. Classed as a ‘Churchman’ in a list of the 1705 Parliament, he did not, however, follow his distant kinsman Henry St. John II* in voting for the Court candidate as Speaker on 25 Oct. 1705. By this date he may well have been ill for he made his will on 21 Oct. His farms in Somerset, Dorset, and Wiltshire, together with unspecified leases of other properties, were secured on his father. He died without issue on 11 Feb. 1706, and was buried in the chancel of Milborne St. Andrew.2 J. Aubrey, Wilts. Colls. 185; Hoare, Wilts. Chalk, 163.
