Elson, a minor when his father died, was left in the care of his grandmother, who in April 1707 secured the passage of an Act enabling her to sell some of the family estates to pay off debts. On coming of age he was added to the Sussex commission of the peace and successfully contested Chichester in 1713, topping the poll. He was classed as a Tory in the Worsley list. Defeated for Chichester in 1715, he did not stand again and died in 1727. His will, proved on 15 May 1727, left his property in trust for his only daughter, and named his grandmother and Thomas Carr* among the trustees.2 HMC Lords, n.s. vii. 68–69; L. K. J. Glassey, Appt.
