biography text
Thomas Archer married a great heiress, whose fortune enabled him to return one Member each at Warwick and Coventry, and ultimately to lease both seats at Bramber from the Gough family. Like his brother Henry, he supported Walpole, except on the place bill of 1740, till the eve of his fall, when he deserted on the Westminster election. After Walpole’s fall he voted with the Government on the Hanoverians till 1746, when he was absent, classed as doubtful. At the general election of 1747 he was raised to the peerage in return for allowing the Government to nominate Members at Bramber.1Corresp. H. Walpole (Yale ed.), xix. 419 n. 11.
