biography text
William Ashe, a merchant, who sat for the family borough as a Whig under Queen Anne, voted for the septennial bill in 1716. During the split of the Whig party in 1717 he and his brother followed their kinsman, Lord Townshend, into opposition, voting against the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts and the peerage bill in 1719.
