Bampfylde, ‘a drunken country gentleman’1Lady Cowper Diary, 96. and a member of the October Club, was returned unopposed for his county in 1715, voting against the Government in all recorded divisions. During the rebellion that year he was one of the Jacobite Members taken into custody for treasonable practices.2CJ, xviii. 328. In 1721 he was mentioned in the seventh report of the South Sea inquiry as having accepted £1,000 stock at 275 on 22 Mar. 1720 without paying for it.3CJ, xix. 570. In the same year his name and that of his brother John were sent to the Pretender as probable supporters in the event of a rising, and after the discovery of the plot of 1722 he sheltered Atterbury’s secretary, Thomas Carte.4Stuart mss 65/16; 216/111.

He died 7 Oct. 1727.
