biography text
Barrington’s family had inherited the manor of Swainstown,1VCH Hants, v. 219. near Newtown, which they had represented since the early seventeenth century. In 1727 he stood with government support for Newtown, for which he was returned on petition in April 1729, voting with the Administration on the Hessian troops in 1730, but against them in all other recorded divisions. He did not stand in 1734 but was returned unopposed in 1741, continuing to vote against the Administration. The 2nd Lord Egmont wrote in his electoral survey c.1749-50 under Newtown:
Sir John Barrington has I believe an interest for one but will I should think be with us.
He died 4 May 1776.
