Returned on the Treasury interest for Orford in January 1746, Bateman voted for the Hanoverians. In the 1747 Parliament he sat for New Woodstock on the interest of his uncle, Charles, 2nd Duke of Marlborough, as a government supporter.

He died 2 Mar. 1802.
