When Albemarle Bertie, the 1st Duke of Ancaster’s brother, stood for the county in 1721, his Tory opponent, Sir William Massingberd wrote:

What the event will be a few days will make clear, but if men are as good as their words, the Duke and his brother must have a little patience and stay till the sky falls before they catch larks.1Sir Wm. Massingberd to B. Massingberd, 1 Jan. 1721, Lincs. Archives Office, Massingberd Mundy deposit 2/10/10.

Defeated for the county, he was returned as a Whig for Boston on the Ancaster interest in 1734, voting with the Administration on the Spanish convention in 1739. He died 23 Jan. 1742, all his estates eventually going to his great-nephew, Brownlow Bertie, 5th Duke of Ancaster.2PCC 42 Trewley.
