Peregrine Bertie’s grandfather was 2nd cousin to the 3rd Earl of Lindsey and the 1st Earl of Abingdon.1Lincs. Peds. (Harl. Soc. 1), i. 129. On the death of Matthew Michell, a government supporter, Bertie was brought in as a Tory for Westbury in 1753 by the 3rd Earl of Abingdon, probably on a compromise with Chauncy Townsend.

He died 28 Dec. 1786.
