In 1715 Bethell contested Pontefract as a Whig, presumably on the interest of Sir William Lowther, 1st Bt., with whom he was returned on petition. He was absent from the division on the septennial bill in 1716, voted with the Government on the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts in 1719, and was absent from the division on the peerage bill. In Sunderland’s plan for the 1722 Parliament he was to be replaced by John Lowther. He did not stand again. He died 4 Feb. 1747, leaving his estate to his brother Slingsby.
