In early life Bethell went to Antigua where he purchased a large plantation.1Oliver, Antigua i. 42-43. Sometime before 1730 he settled in London as a rich merchant, concerned in the African trade.2Bd. Trade Jnl. 1728-34, pp. 447, 455, 465. Returned for the city as an opposition Whig in 1747, he supported a petition by freemen of London for a bill to suppress hawkers and pedlars. In 1750 he was associated with Admiral Vernon and Stephen Theodore Janssen in the foundation of the British Herring Fishery Company, of which he became president.3Gent. Mag. 1750, p. 474. He died 1 Nov. 1758.
