Jacob des Bouverie, a Turkey merchant, owed his seat to his brother-in-law, Sir Philip Boteler, M.P. for Hythe 1690-1708. Though originally a Tory, he seems to have come round after the accession of George I, supporting the septennial bill, abstaining in the other major divisions, and figuring in Craggs’ lists of 1719 as ‘doubtful’, to be spoken to by Sir Samuel Lennard. He died 2 Sept. 1722, leaving his Kent estates to his nephew, Sir Jacob Bouverie.
Volume
