biography text
James Carmichael was returned unopposed on his family’s interest for Linlithgow Burghs in 1734, voting with the Administration in all recorded divisions. At the 1741 election he was involved in a double return with James Mackye, an opposition candidate, on which he withdrew his petition in January 1742. Defeated in 1747 by Lawrence Dundas, a wealthy contractor, his petition was this time successful. Up to the date of his death, about April 1754, he was drawing a secret service pension of £400.1Add. 33038, ff. 353, 415.
