biography text
Thomas Carter was returned for Hull on his family’s interest as a government supporter. He more than once applied unsuccessfully to Newcastle for a living for his brother Robert. When Thomas was abroad for his health, Robert himself applied to Newcastle, pointing out that
my father and brother have been in Parliament some years and have shown the firmest attachment to your Grace’s friends, without having received any mark of favour from the Government for any one of a numerous family.1Add. 32724, f.394.
Carter did not stand again. He died 3 June 1767.
